Aug. 10th, 2009 01:55 pmApparently last night's union meeting was quite an eyeopener for the membership. I wasn't there, so I only have secondhand information. The main topic of interest was bumping rights in the aftermath of the library eliminating 41 positions. There is some contention as to how the seniority list is to be used. The contract says that displaced employee may bump another employee in the same job series with the least seniority. The union management says this really means anyone with less seniority, which has completely different results. They say that in their negotiation notes, this is the intention of the paragraph. I say that the membership voted on what was written in the contract, not what was intended. I'm not sure how this will play out, but it seems unfair to say "Oh you voted on something, but its not what we meant, so we're using it the way we want." The idea is that since this will create a great deal of chaos, the administration will find a way to avoid have to resort to the bumping rules. I think they won't care, because it doesn't cost the administration anything.
